An Interesting Post From 2008

A New Start? An Escape? Wanderlust?

Sometimes, I think I want to sell everything thing I own – furniture, books, comics, TV – everything. Put what I want in storage and travel the world for a year – or longer – with nothing but a backpack, a video camera and my MacBook.

After all, I’ve nothing holding me here in NYC – no lover, no kids, no pressing career or awesome career prospects. Just bills, bills, bills, two cats and a great deal on a rent-stabilized apartment which I’d be willing to give-up in a heartbeat.

Perhaps, I’ll head back down to South America and teach English for a few months in Buenos Aries; then hop over to Europe with a Euro-Rail pass in my back pocket and hit England, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and of course, the Netherlands. India would be after that – I really want to see the Taj Mahal. I think I’d like to travel the world without anything hanging over my head, no need to get back to do anything or be anywhere…  I’d like to think my friends and family would still be here when I came back. If I came back… I’m craving freedom.

Maybe, I should start auditioning for more regional theaters or a cruise ship and get out of the city, for a few months at a time, that is, if I actually book something. I haven’t booked anything since January and it’s August already, I don’t know if that’s a plan I can count on to get me out. Maybe I should just be auditioning more in general!

Mayhaps my time at the Desk – if I stay through the holidays; what’s five months? It’ll fly by, right? – could pay for the trip and I wouldn’t have to sell anything.

I wrote this post two years ago, just after I started back at the Desk after my six year hiatus, “…just for two months, to cover vacations and earn a few bucks, it wasn’t going to be permanant.” Or so I thought… It was a year after 5 Takes: Latin America and I was depressed and getting fat due to the fact nothing bigger came from that experience. I had no choice but to go back to working another survival job other than just cock-tailing at the ‘plex to make ends meet.

I guess that was when the spark of inspiration came to me, who knew?
